“This is the assigned moment for God to
come to the center and for me to slip off to the sidelines.” – John 3:30 (The
Message)
As I’ve mentioned several times in the past weeks we are
in the season of Advent, which is understood to be a season of
preparation. The above passage is
taken from the Gospel of John at a time when John the Baptist is specifically
telling the crowd that he is not the Messiah, in fact, John is saying that it his
time for him to step out of the spotlight and make room for the Messiah.
I think this is what Advent is all about. It’s about taking the time to examine
our lives and consider the ways that we need to take a backseat to God. We don’t have to figure everything out by
ourselves, rather, we believe in a God that can be trusted. We are called to allow God to increase
in our lives and to ourselves decrease.
It sounds scary and completely contrary to the messages
in our culture, but there is great wisdom, peace, and hope in trusting God
rather than our own understanding.
